Recap: New England Patriots 38, NY Giants 35

A perfect 16-0 regular season won't mean squat if the Patriots don't win their next three games and another Super Bowl. And it seems to me that they have been playing worse each week.

"We've been dealing with being undefeated all season," Brady said "It was kind of a strange game. It really doesn't mean much to either team, but it means a lot."

New England became the first NFL team since the 1972 Dolphins to win every game on thier (WEAK ASS) schedule, and that one was only 14-0. This victory required a Brady-engineered comeback from a 12-point deficit and smashed the Patriots' league mark for consecutive victories.

"Hats off to us," said record-setting receiver Randy Moss, who caught Brady's 65-yard bomb for the go-ahead score that set two major records. "I know a lot of people didn't think we were going to do it. A lot of people didn't want us to do it.

"In this game of football, it's hard to go 16-and-0. As a football player and a fan of the game, my hat's off to this organization."

In gaining their 19th straight win over two seasons, the Patriots went on top on Brady's 50th touchdown pass of the year and Moss' 23rd TD reception. Both records that came with 11:06 remaining.

Tom Brady beat Peyton Manning's mark of 49 touchdown passes and Moss broke Jerry Rice's record of 22 TD receptions. And the Patriots finished with an incredible 589 points for the season, another single-season record (with a weak ass schedule).

Once the victory was clinched, Belichick was barely more animated than usual. He shared hugs with players and assistant coaches on the sideline, but there was no thought of carrying him off on the Patriots' shoulders or dumping Gatorade all over him.

"It's a great feeling," Belichick admitted. "Now is the time to take a day or two and appreciate what this team has done, but at the same time we have our biggest game of the year coming up. Pretty soon we need to turn the page and move on."

"We didn't win the game, but if you saw everybody in the locker room, everybody was excited," Manning said. "I never saw a locker room so upbeat after a loss because we played so well, did some good things and hung in there in a game where we didn't have to play. We wanted to. We wanted to come out and play well, and we did that."

The New York Giants (10-6), already guaranteed a playoff game against Tampa Bay next weekend and with little to play for except spoiling New England's perfect ride, led 28-16 in the third quarter. It was the Patriots' largest deficit all year as the Giants showed no fear and plenty of versatility, scoring the most points New England allowed in a game during this remarkable run.

Manning threw for four touchdowns and Domenik Hixon, in his first game as New York's primary kick returner, went 74 yards for a score 11 seconds after Brady and Moss tied their respective records.

Brady dropping back, winding up and hitting a wide-open Moss in stride for a touchdown. The final go-ahead TD in their perfect year.

"What I'm most proud of is playing a playoff team on the road that was playing extremely hard," Brady said. "We found a way to come back and win. We did the same thing at Dallas. We did the same thing at Indy. We've been in some tough games.

"Everyone is going to enjoy this one. It happens once every 35 years." at the same building where they were caught videotaping New York Jets assistant coaches in Week 1, a rules violation that cost Belichick and the franchise $750,000 in fines and a 2008 first-round draft choice. That made Belichick even more close-mouthed and dour than usual, and his team followed his lead -- right to 16-0.

The Giants opened the game as if they were, well, the Patriots, driving 74 yards, sparked by a 52-yard completion on which Plaxico Burress outleapt Ellis Hobbs for Manning's jump-ball throw. Brandon Jacobs broke Tedy Bruschi's tackle to score on a 7-yard reception for a 7-0 lead.

Naturally, the Patriots, the highest-scoring team in NFL history, struck back. After Stephen Gostkowski's 37-yard field goal, New England went on top -- and surpassed Minnesota's league mark of 556 points -- on the record-tying 4-yard TD pass from Brady to Moss, who soared above rookie Aaron Ross for the score.

The 10-7 lead lasted all of 11 seconds. The usually staid Patriots gathered around Moss as he did a dance in the end zone, prompting a 15-yard excessive celebration penalty. Belichick argued the call with referee Mike Carey, perhaps sensing how costly it might be.

It was as Hixon sped 74 yards untouched to lift the Giants back in front.

Eli Manning, coming off several rough games, lead a quick 85-yard drive that included a rare scramble for 11 yards just before he found Kevin Boss in the middle of the end zone with 13 seconds remaining. The 21-16 deficit was only the second time New England has trailed at halftime this season; the other was to the older Manning and the Colts.

But with such a potent offense, the Patriots never are out of any game. Once they got the lead, they closed it out with another touchdown drive, Maroney scoring from the 5. Manning hit Burress again from 3 yards with 1:04 to go, but New England recovered the onside kick.

Tom Brady finished 32-for-42 for 356 yards, while Manning was 22-for-32 for 251 yards and the only interception.

David Akers blew it big time and buried his head in his hands while the New York Giants partied all around him.

Eli Manning threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress and Lawrence Tynes made three key field goals and the NY Giants moved that much closer to clinching a playoff spot with a sweet 16-13 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Akers hit the right upright on a 57-yard attempt with one second left after Donovan McNabb finally woke up and drove the Eagles 50 yards in the final minute. The Eagles are not good.

The NY Giants (9-4) have all but eliminated the Eagles from playoff contention with their sixth consecutive win on the road. New York is a slam duck for the No. 5 seed in the conference with 3 games left.

The defending NFC East champion Eagles can start looking forward to gold now following their third straight loss and fifth loss by four points or less.

Ole D. McNabb hasnt played since spraining his right ankle in the second quarter against Miami and A.J. Feeley led the Eagles to a win over the Dolphins, but threw costly interceptions in the final minutes of losses to New England and Seattle.

After McNabb led the he Eagles into the end zone on their first possession, they managed just a pair of field goals the rest of the game.

The Ny Giants were driving to put the game away when defensive end Juqua Thomas came from behind and forced Brandon Jacobs to fumble following a 21-yard gain. Thomas recovered it at the Eagles 5 with 5:51 left.

Philly drove to New York's 44, but McNabb's pass to Jason Avant on fourth-and-6 was incomplete and the Eagles didn't get the ball again until the final minute. It appeared linebacker Antonio Pierce hit Avant early, but no flag was thrown. With no timeouts and 53 seconds remaining, McNabb moved the Eagles from their 11 to the Giants 39, but Akers couldn't send it into overtime and missed the 50+ field goal.

New York pounched on a fumble by surehanded Brian Westbrook in the third quarter to take their first lead.

Justin Tuck forced Westbrook to fumble and gave the Giants the ball at the Eagles 37. Westbrook hadn't lost a fumble since Week 5 of last season. "It was a bad situation to turn the ball over," Westbrook said. "As a leader, you can't have that. I really hurt the club."

Eli Manning finally found the end zone for the first time. A 19-yard catch by Amani Toomer set up the 20-yard scoring pass to Burress that put New York ahead 13-10.

The Giants tied an NFL record by sacking McNabb 12 times in week 4, including six by THE MAN - Osi Umenyiora, in a 16-3 win. This time they didn't bring McNabb down until Umenyiora sacked him in the 3rd quarter.

McNabb had better protection but everyone was covered this time. He finished 20-of-30 for a weakass 179 yards, one TD and no turnovers. Westbrook ran for 116 yards.

Manning was mediocore and went 17-of-31 for 219 yards and one TD. Burress turned in another hot fantasy performance and caught seven passes for 136 yards.

McNabb started off really hot and completed all three of his passes during a 68-yard opening drive. The Eagles had a great chance after Omar Gaither forced Jacobs to fumble immediately after a catch. Mike Patterson recovered and returned it 12 yards to the Giants 8.

New York was stuffed in the second quarter after a sweet 35-yard run by Reuben Droughns and ended up with the ball at the Philadelphia 1. But the Eagles man'd up and made four stops at the goal line and Tynes hit a 19-yarder to cut it to 7-3.

CHICAGO (AP) -- Eli Manning's second pass landed in Brian Urlacher's hands. There was a fumble that led to a field goal, too, and just when it seemed his day couldn't get much worse, he threw an interception in the end zone.

Then, everything turned around.

Manning redeemed himself just in time, and the New York Giants dealt the Chicago Bears' playoff hopes another staggering blow.

Manning led two late touchdown drives and Reuben Droughns scored on a 2-yard run with 1:33 remaining to lift the Giants to a 21-16 victory over the Bears on Sunday.

Manning was awful for most of the game but delivered in the latter stages after throwing four interceptions the previous week in a drubbing by Minnesota.

The Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens might have had the best touchdown celebration of the year last night when he took some popcorn and threw it in his face. The NFL rules are pretty clear on this one and If you use a prop in a touchdown celebration, you get fined. So Owens will get fined. But my personal rule is if the celebration is funny, I endorse it. And I thought that one was funny.

Eli laid a big egg with older brother Peyton watching in the luxury box, Darren Sharper, Dwight Smith and Chad Greenway all picked off easy passes by Eli and returned them for touchdowns leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 41-17 victory over the New York Giants.

Darren Sharper scored on a 20-yard return, Qwight Smith ran one back 93 yards and Chad Greenway followed from 37 yards just a few plays later. The Vikings set a team record for interception returns for touchdowns in one game.

The Minnesota Vikings nearly had a fourth return in handing the Giants their second loss in the last three games. Smith returned a second-quarter interception 19 yards to the Giants 8, setting up a touchdown run by backup RB Chester Taylor.

The Giants looked crappy from the start. Tarvaris Jackson threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Sidney Rice just 41 seconds after the opening kickoff in helping Minnesota win back-to-back games for the first time this season.

The Vikings are now back in to the wild-card chase and prevented the Giants from taking a two-game lead for the top wild-card berth.

Manning finished 21-of-49 for 249 yards and 4 interceptions. He threw a meaningless 6-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress in the fourth quarter. Reuben Droughns scored on a 1-yard run for the Giants and Lawrence Tynes kicked a 48-yard field goal.

The loss dropped the Giants 3 games behind Dallas in the NFC East with 5 games to play. The Cowboys have the tiebreaker should they finish tied, having won both games this season.

The Vikings have owned Eli Manning in their last two games. They intercepted him a career-high 4 times in 2005 in a game also won in record fashion. They returned an interception, kickoff and punt for touchdowns in the same game.

Darren Sharper, who intercepted 3 passes and scored on a 92-yard return in the 2005 game, gave the Vikings a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter on a return on which he was not touched after Manning threw behind tight end Jeremy Shockey.

Dwight Smith, the Vikings' other safety, helped push the lead to 21-7 with the interception that set up the score by Taylor, who carried 31 times for 77 yards filling in for Adrian Peterson. Manning apparently is blind and didnt see Smith while throwing to Burress.

Smith and Greenway put the game out of reach with their touchdowns. Smith picked off a pass that was tipped by linebacker Ben Leber and went from one end of the stadium to the other on his 93-yard sprint down the right sidelines to the endzone.

Manning completed a pass to start the next series, before Greenway stepped made Eli his *** and stepped in front of another pass to Shockey and scored.

The Giants should have known things were going to go bad when Tynes' kickoff went out of bounds to start the game and 2 plays later, Jackson went play-action and found a streaking Rice down the right sidelines for a big score on a play that Giants cornerback Aaron Ross was called for pass interference.

Droughns tied the game on the Giants' opening series, scoring from a yard out to cap a 65-yard drive that turned out to be New York's only effective series of the half but it wasnt nearly enough.

The Dallas Cowboys will get a chance to go 10-1 Thursday when they take on the New York Jets in the Cowboys' traditional Thanksgiving Day game.

Dallas (9-1) should not llook ahead to its looming matchup with fellow NFC heavyweight Green Bay next week, it got it on Sunday as the Jets (2-8) upset previously 7-2 Pittsburgh.

"For us, each game is its own big game, its own deal," Tony Romo said. "We don't look past any opponent."

The Cowboys started 9-1 in 1976 with Roger Staubach at quarterback and in 1983 with Danny White under center and Tony Dorsett at tailback, but each of those teams lost their next game. With the chance to do something no other Dallas team has done, the current Cowboys are ready for the challenge.

Dallas will also be trying to put together two 5 game winning streaks in a season for just the third time.

The 4th victory in its most recent streak, 28-23 over the Redskins on Sunday, was a closer than most of the contests Dallas had been used to winning. In their eight victories before Sunday, the Cowboys had won by an average of 15.2 points.

The Redskins, though, held the lead for much of the first half and trailed just 14-13 at the end of the third quarter at Texas Stadium.

Romo and Terrell Owens took over and that lead stood up.

After connecting on 2 touchdown passes in the first three quarters, Owens caught 2 more from Romo in the fourth to tie Bob Hayes' 37-year-old team record of 4 touchdowns in a game.

T.O finished with 8 catches for 173 yards and has 4 straight games with at least 100 receiving yards, catching eight TDs in that stretch.

"I'm just playing out of my mind right now," he said. "This is one of the greatest games, really, that I feel like I've played in, just me coming through in the clutch. I pride myself in trying to make plays for the team. When my number's called and opportunities are there for us to make plays, I know that's my job."

T.O. even lined up at defensive back on the final play of the game and smacked away Jason Campbell's Hail Mary attempt - it was Owens' first career pass breakup - to preserve the win.

Winning is something the Jets had gotten used to last year as they surprisingly made the playoffs in coach Eric Mangini's first season. But except for a Week 3 win over winless Miami, nothing had gone right for the jets in 2007 - at least before ***-slappin Pittsburgh 19-16 in overtime last week.

NY Jets tailback Thomas Jones became the first player in 35 games to rush for 100 yards against the Steelers, finishing with 117, and New York won its second game of the season.

Just like the 31-28 win over Miami, it wasn't easy. The Steelers had appeared to take control of the game in the fourth quarter, going up 16-13 with 8:41 to play. But Clemens led a drive that produced a 28-yard Mike Nugent field goal that tied the game in the waning seconds, and Nugent connected in overtime for his fourth field goal of the day, helping the Jets end a six-game losing streak.

The NY Jets didn't get a whole lot going offensively. New QB Clemens, who has taken over for Chad Pennington, was 14-of-31 for 162 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Laveranues Coles was lost with a sprained ankle early after Coles made a 56-yard catch that set up New York's first score, and Jerrico Cotchery, the team's leading receiver with 687 yards, was held to one catch for 5 yards.

"We still haven't played our best game of the season," Shaun Ellis said. "We want to put together a good effort and put it all together."

The NY Jets held the Pittsburgh Steelers offense in check, sacking Ben Roethlisberger seven times after having recorded only 9 sacks in their first 9 games. They also held Willie Parker to 52 yards on 21 carries, surprising for a group that was ranked 30th overall and last against the run.

The Jets will get a big test against Dallas, which owns the second-rated offense in the league, averaging 32.4 points and 393.0 yards per game. Dem Cowboys could be without wide receiver Patrick Crayton, who missed both practices this week with a sprained left ankle.

The Dallas Cowboys are 25-14 on Thanksgiving. The Jets are making their first Thanksgiving appearance since 1985, when they lost at Detroit.

The Dallas Cowboys are 6-2 against the New York Jets, who will be visiting Dallas for just the third time.

The Giants (7-3) begin a stretch of five straight contests against teams at or below the .500 mark when the Minnesota Vikings (4-6) bring their top-ranked rushing attack to the Meadowlands on Sunday.

The game will also be the second of three straight for New York against NFC North opponents. Last week, they rebounded from their second loss of the season to division-leading Dallas with a 16-10 win at Detroit, seizing control of the top wild-card spot. Next week, New York plays at Chicago.

The Giants have won seven of eight since an 0-2 start and have only lost to Green Bay and Dallas, who were a combined 18-2 entering their Thanksgiving Day games. Due to tiebreakers, New York would have to make up three games on Dallas to win the division, but any other NFC opponent would have to make up two games to overtake the Giants for the top wild-card berth.

"We have to play to try to stay there and work our way into the playoffs and get another shot at those upper-tier teams that we have already played," defensive tackle Barry Cofield said. "We have so much to play for, so much still on our plate, and so much still to be excited about. There is no time to mope."

The Giants have a recent history of second-half swoons, including a 2-6 slide last season that nearly cost them a playoff spot. At 1-1 since the midway point this year, they're already in better shape than they were in 2006, when they lost four straight to begin the second half.

New York will, however, have to contend with some key injuries, the same issue that played a big role in last season's slide. Linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka went down for the season with a broken leg last week, while running back Brandon Jacobs suffered a pulled hamstring.

With other prolific pass rushers in Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck, the Giants may be able to overcome Kiwanuka's absence, but with running back Derrick Ward missing the last three games with ankle and groin injuries, New York is suddenly thin at that position.

Jacobs and Ward are uncertain for this week, meaning veteran Reuben Droughns could start after rushing for just 13 yards on 11 carries in the second half against the Lions. He'll be backed up by rookie Ahmad Bradshaw, who has never carried the ball on offense. New York signed former New England Patriot Patrick Pass this week to add depth.

Uncertainty at running back is new for the Giants, as now-retired Tiki Barber started 77 of the last 80 games before this year.

"Unfortunately this year we've had a series of things that have occurred and have allowed that guys wouldn't be able to play," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "Somebody else has had to step up and play, and they've done a pretty good job with that."

New York may emphasize the passing game this week due to their thin backfield and Minnesota's NFL-best rush defense. The Vikings are allowing just 74.4 yards per game on the ground after leading the league in that category last year (61.6).

Giants quarterback Eli Manning has been plagued by inconsistency this season, and that was the case the last two weeks. He threw two interceptions and was sacked five times in the loss to Dallas, but was 28-of-39 for 283 yards and a touchdown against Detroit.

While the Giants could have a tough time running the ball Sunday, Manning will be facing a Vikings pass defense that at 288.4 yards per game, is the worst in the league by 18.9 yards.

Minnesota, meanwhile, figures to run the ball often rather than consistently subject second-year quarterback Tarvaris Jackson and the NFL's second-worst pass offense to New York's league-best pass rush, which has 34 sacks.

Jackson returned from a concussion to post his best-ever quarterback rating as a starter (79.9) last week, when he went 17-of-22 for 171 yards and an interception. He'll have help from Minnesota's rushing offense, the best in football at 177.9 yards a game - more than 30 better than the next-best running attack.

The last team to lead the league in both rushing and rush defense was the 2001 Pittsburgh Steelers, who finished 13-3.

The Vikings dominated again on the ground last week, even with NFL rushing leader Adrian Peterson sidelined with a knee injury. Chester Taylor took over and ran for 164 yards and three touchdowns in a 29-22 win over Oakland, which improved the Vikings' slim playoff hopes.

Coach Brad Childress called Peterson a "long shot" to play this week, and it would seem unnecessary to rush him back after Taylor's performance. Peterson broke the NFL single-game rushing record with 296 yards against San Diego on Nov. 4.

"I ain't the one to start no controversy," Taylor said. "I knew I could do what I did in the game. I'm going to play hard no matter what, and if I get the opportunity I'm going to take advantage of it."

In the teams' last meeting in 2005, Manning threw four interceptions as Minnesota won 24-21. That was the clubs' first matchup at Giants Stadium since the Vikings lost the NFC championship game 41-0 in 2001. The Giants have won three of the last four meetings overall.

Michael Strahan had a season-high 3 sacks, helping the New York Giants beat the Detroit Lions 16-10 Sunday to gain the advantage in the NFC wild-card race.

New York (7-3) broke a third-place tie with Detroit in the conference and improved its chances of making the playoffs. 78.4 percent of teams that won seven of their first 10 games ended up in the postseason.

The Giants lost their first 2 games, won six straight, then lost to Dallas for a second time before handing Detroit its first defeat at home.

"We'll take the 7-3. I'm too tired to worry about how we got there," Strahan said. "Hopefully, we'll get another run going. We started one today."

The Lions (6-4) dropped back-to-back games for the first time this year, and took it hard after losing their other three games by double digits.

"Yeah, it's more difficult because that is not a better football team than us," quarterback Jon Kitna said. "We gave them the football game."

Strahan took offense to Kitna's take on the game.

"I honestly thought in the first half that was one of the worst teams we played that was 6-3," he said. "I don't quite understand why Jon would say that.

"Maybe we'll see them down the road and if that's the case, we'll beat that a-- again."

Detroit might need to beat the NFC North-leading Green Bay Packers at home on Thanksgiving to maintain a realistic chance at making the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

"Is the season over? Absolutely not," offensive tackle Jeff Backus said. "It's one stumble in our path."

The Giants leaned on their defense to block Detroit's road to success.

Strahan and Co. put pressure on Kitna, forcing him out of the pocket to rush throws.

When Kitna did have time late in the game, Madison and James Butler came through for the Giants with key interceptions to shut down a team that had been scoring in bunches at home.

"They scored 31 points a game here," Strahan said. "The way we played today we should be very happy."

The win came at a price: Jacobs was sidelined in the third quarter with a left hamstring injury and linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka broke his left leg early in the game.

New York coach Tom Coughlin wasn't sure how serious Jacobs' injury was, but said Kiwanuka may be done for the season.

"It's obviously a big loss for us," Coughlin said.

Eli Manning threw a touchdown pass to Jacobs late in the first half and Lawrence Tynes kicked three field goals to give the Giants a 16-3 lead early in the fourth.

Detroit finally put together a strong drive, ending with Calvin Johnson's 35-yard TD catch to pull within six with 4:34 left.

After a three-and-out drive, Detroit drove to midfield and Kitna heaved an up-for-grabs pass to Shaun McDonald that Butler leaped to snag just inside the end zone.

The Lions had one more chance, getting the ball at their 32 with 1:25 left, but a pass went off McDonald's hands in New York territory and right to Madison in the final minute.

"That's the position we want to be in," McDonald said. "I didn't make the plays at the end."

In the second and third quarters, New York kept the Lions in the game by fumbling twice inside their 30.

But Kitna threw three interceptions, overshadowing the 28 passes he completed for 377 yards and a score. McDonald and Roy Williams both went over the 100-yard mark as the Lions were forced to throw because they could not run. Kevin Jones was limited to just 25 yards on 11 carries.

Manning was 28-of-39 for 283 yards with a score, spreading the ball around to five receivers who made at least four catches. ^Notes: Strahan, who missed all of training camp while deciding whether he wanted to play or retire, leads all active players with 140 1/2 sacks. ... Detroit S Idrees Bashir (knee) was injured on the opening kickoff and is scheduled for an MRI on Monday. ... Detroit fell to 0-3 vs. the NFC East and hosts division-leading Dallas next month.
