The Jets hold the distinction of being the first AFL team to defeat an NFL club in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game when they defeated the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.

New York Jets

The New York Jets are a professional American football team based in the New York metropolitan area. They are members of the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Dallas Cowboys will get a chance to go 10-1 Thursday when they take on the New York Jets in the Cowboys' traditional Thanksgiving Day game.

Dallas (9-1) should not llook ahead to its looming matchup with fellow NFC heavyweight Green Bay next week, it got it on Sunday as the Jets (2-8) upset previously 7-2 Pittsburgh.

"For us, each game is its own big game, its own deal," Tony Romo said. "We don't look past any opponent."

The Cowboys started 9-1 in 1976 with Roger Staubach at quarterback and in 1983 with Danny White under center and Tony Dorsett at tailback, but each of those teams lost their next game. With the chance to do something no other Dallas team has done, the current Cowboys are ready for the challenge.

Dallas will also be trying to put together two 5 game winning streaks in a season for just the third time.

The 4th victory in its most recent streak, 28-23 over the Redskins on Sunday, was a closer than most of the contests Dallas had been used to winning. In their eight victories before Sunday, the Cowboys had won by an average of 15.2 points.

The Redskins, though, held the lead for much of the first half and trailed just 14-13 at the end of the third quarter at Texas Stadium.

Romo and Terrell Owens took over and that lead stood up.

After connecting on 2 touchdown passes in the first three quarters, Owens caught 2 more from Romo in the fourth to tie Bob Hayes' 37-year-old team record of 4 touchdowns in a game.

T.O finished with 8 catches for 173 yards and has 4 straight games with at least 100 receiving yards, catching eight TDs in that stretch.

"I'm just playing out of my mind right now," he said. "This is one of the greatest games, really, that I feel like I've played in, just me coming through in the clutch. I pride myself in trying to make plays for the team. When my number's called and opportunities are there for us to make plays, I know that's my job."

T.O. even lined up at defensive back on the final play of the game and smacked away Jason Campbell's Hail Mary attempt - it was Owens' first career pass breakup - to preserve the win.

Winning is something the Jets had gotten used to last year as they surprisingly made the playoffs in coach Eric Mangini's first season. But except for a Week 3 win over winless Miami, nothing had gone right for the jets in 2007 - at least before ***-slappin Pittsburgh 19-16 in overtime last week.

NY Jets tailback Thomas Jones became the first player in 35 games to rush for 100 yards against the Steelers, finishing with 117, and New York won its second game of the season.

Just like the 31-28 win over Miami, it wasn't easy. The Steelers had appeared to take control of the game in the fourth quarter, going up 16-13 with 8:41 to play. But Clemens led a drive that produced a 28-yard Mike Nugent field goal that tied the game in the waning seconds, and Nugent connected in overtime for his fourth field goal of the day, helping the Jets end a six-game losing streak.

The NY Jets didn't get a whole lot going offensively. New QB Clemens, who has taken over for Chad Pennington, was 14-of-31 for 162 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Laveranues Coles was lost with a sprained ankle early after Coles made a 56-yard catch that set up New York's first score, and Jerrico Cotchery, the team's leading receiver with 687 yards, was held to one catch for 5 yards.

"We still haven't played our best game of the season," Shaun Ellis said. "We want to put together a good effort and put it all together."

The NY Jets held the Pittsburgh Steelers offense in check, sacking Ben Roethlisberger seven times after having recorded only 9 sacks in their first 9 games. They also held Willie Parker to 52 yards on 21 carries, surprising for a group that was ranked 30th overall and last against the run.

The Jets will get a big test against Dallas, which owns the second-rated offense in the league, averaging 32.4 points and 393.0 yards per game. Dem Cowboys could be without wide receiver Patrick Crayton, who missed both practices this week with a sprained left ankle.

The Dallas Cowboys are 25-14 on Thanksgiving. The Jets are making their first Thanksgiving appearance since 1985, when they lost at Detroit.

The Dallas Cowboys are 6-2 against the New York Jets, who will be visiting Dallas for just the third time.

  • Recap: Washington Redskins 23, New York Jets 20, OT

Shaun Suisham hammered the football from 46 yards out and watched as it barely floated over the crossbar.

It was long enough and good enough to help the Washington Redskins a 23-20 overtime victory over the New York Jets on Sunday.

"It's a good feeling," Suisham said. "You feel like you contributed to the team. The guys are working so hard all game and you're off on your own. When you get an opportunity like that, you feel more like a football player."

Shaun's winning kick was his 5th field goal, tying a franchise record. He kicked another 46-yarder earlier, along with field goals of 40, 22 and 40 yards for Washington (5-3).

"I'm glad they all went through," Suisham said. "I didn't do anything special."

    vida-guerra

Leon Washington returned the opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown, becoming the first Jets player to have at least three in a season. "That's a good way to start a game," Washington said.

Washington erased a 14-point deficit and beat the Jets for the 8th time in 9 meetings, thanks to the legs of Suisham and running back Clinton Portis. Washington finished with 296 yards rushing.

"I'm ready to carry this team," said Portis, whose 36 rushes were two short of a career high. "I've been telling coach that: Just put it on me."

The loss spoiled a nice effort by new starting QB Kellen Clemens. The second-year player, picked as New York's starter in place of Chad Pennington, was 23-of-42 for 226 yards and a touchdown. He also gained 48 yards on seven carries.

"It's just so frustrating at this point," Clemens said. "We battled so hard for four quarters and then the overtime period, and we just came up short on a kick that didn't make it by much."

New York couldn't do anything after a 39-yard reception by Jerricho Cotchery to open the extra period, then Washington stuck to the ground on its first possession. Portis gained 37 of his yards on the drive to get the Redskins into field-goal position and Suisham nailed the winning kick for the Redskins' second overtime victory this season.

"We knew we had to stop the run and we didn't, and that's why the game turned out the way it did," linebacker Eric Barton said.

"Nobody likes to be embarrassed," Clinton Portis said. "The best thing about it was that everybody forgot it. We didn't linger on it"

    kate bosworth

After Barton intercepted Jason Campbell's throw as the Redskins were driving for a go-ahead score in the third quarter, the Jets followed with a turnover on a disputed call. Cotchery caught a pass from Clemens and was immediately hit by both Pierson Prioleau and Shawn Springs, who forced a fumble. LaRon Landry recovered the ball for the Redskins, but Jets coach Eric Mangini challenged the call. The officials upheld the call.

The Redskins then marched downfield on 6 plays, with Portis going over the top for a touchdown with 11:06 left. Campbell completed a pass to Antwaan Randle El for a 2-point conversion to make it 20-17.

The Redskinds gave the Jets a 7-0 lead before most of the fans had even settled into their seats. The NFL leader in kickoff return average ran straight ahead, went to his left and took off down the sideline and into the end zone. He's the 11th player in NFL history to have 3 kickoff returns in a season, and first since Buffalo's Terrence McGee in 2004.

Joe Kowalewski caught a 1-yard pass for his first NFL touchdown, giving the Jets a 17-3 lead in the second quarter.

"There's no questioning the heart or the desire or the work ethic of this team," Clemens said. "We're just falling short."

The Jets played without wide receiver Laveranues Coles, whose streak of 104 regular-season starts ended because of a concussion.

Kellen Clemens finally takes over for Chad Pennington as Quarterback and tries to help the Jets end a 5 game losing streak when they host the Washington Redskins.

New York is off to a terrible 1-7 start and Chad Pennington's struggles are only part of the problem. While his numbers rank him in the middle of the pack among NFL quarterbacks, he hasn't been able to lead his club to many wins.

The Jets are 30th in the league in total offense with 284.3 yards per game and rank 26th in scoring with 17.4 points a contest. Pennington hasn't been helped by the Jets' rushing attack, which is averaging just 90.9 yards per game despite adding running back Thomas Jones in the offseason.

    tina_obrien_blue_big.jpg

"I made this decision not based on singling out Chad for where we are, but based on the fact that I think Kellen has earned this opportunity," coach Eric Mangini said. "I want to give him this opportunity. It's in no way an indication that Chad is solely responsible. We all are."

Clemens has appeared in 5 games since being taken in the second round of the 2006 draft out of Oregon. He's completed 29 of 60 passes for 362 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions.   Clemens started in place of an injured Pennington on Sept. 16 in Baltimore, and went 19-for-37 for 260 yards with one TD and two picks in New York's 20-13 loss.

"Getting your first start out of the way I think is pretty big," Clemens said. "So now going into what will be my second start, I feel a lot better, a lot more confident."

The Jets' skid reached five last Sunday when they managed just 254 yards of offense - their second-lowest total of the season - in a 13-3 home defeat to Buffalo.

    bhbik3.jpg

Pennington had 106 yards on 13 completions and was sacked three times. Clemens replaced him late in the game and was 5-of-12 for 67 yards and two interceptions.

"It's exciting to have the opportunity and I'm looking forward to the chance to play," Clemens said. "At the same time, there's a losing streak right now that this entire team needs to work hard to turn around."

This season, Chad has thrown for 1,317 yards and nine touchdowns in seven games, but has 7 interceptions,  as defensive backs seem to be keying on a lack of arm strength.

"I'm disappointed and it's a frustrating time for me," Pennington said. "At the same time, it's not about me. It's about our team and our team moving forward and I understand that."

Thomas Jones has only 2 100-yard rushing games and has failed to score a TD after running for 1,210 yards and six scores to help Chicago reach the Super Bowl last season. With the inexperienced Clemens now running the team, Jones might get more carries.

"The coaches coach and I play," said Jones, averaging just 3.8 yards per carry. "I'm a player and I go out and do what they ask me to do. I get paid to do what they ask me to do to the best of my ability. The coaches coach. I have confidence in them that they are going to make the right decisions and they have confidence in me that I'm going to go out there and perform what I have to."

The Washington Redskins bounce back against one of the worst teams after being abused 52-7 last week by New England partiots.  The Redskins are 7-1 all-time against the Jets.

The Redskins got abused on many levels - total yards (486), passing yards (334) and rushing yards (154). They also committed a season-worst four turnovers and held the ball for just 22 minutes, 11 seconds.

It was Washington's worst loss since a 53-0 defeat to the New York Giants during its 1-12-1 season of 1961.

"If you get down in the dumps for losing against a team like that, you shouldn't be here," receiver Santana Moss said. "What's done is done. They showed us how they were, and we had nothing to answer for it. All we can do is look at it and feel awful about it, or look at it and say 'Hey, we experienced it, and let's try not to go that route again.'"

This will be Moss' first game against his former team since New York traded him to Washington for fellow receiver Laveranues Coles in March 2005. The Jets selected Moss with the 16th overall pick in the 2001 draft, and he caught 151 passes for 2,416 yards and 19 TDs in four seasons with New York.

Laveranues Coles hasn't missed a game since his rookie season in 2000 and has 104 consecutive regular-season starts. He's the only NFL wide receiver to start in every game since 2001.

"I always want to play," Coles said Friday. "I'm wholeheartedly into it and I always feel good. I feel like if I'm able to walk then I'm able to play. With something like this, I have to let the doctors and our coaching staff do their jobs in coming up with the right decision and trust that."

  • Recap: Cincinnati 38, New York Jets 31

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Don't blame Chad Pennington solely for this one. He had a lot of help.

Kenny Watson ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns in the best performance of his career, and the Cincinnati Bengals turned the New York Jets' second-half meltdown into a 38-31 victory Sunday.

Hardly a drive went by without a major gaffe by two of the NFL's most disappointing teams.

The Bengals (2-4) snapped a four-game losing streak that was their longest during coach Marvin Lewis' five seasons. Watson led the way, playing like a star instead of Rudi Johnson's fill-in.

The seventh-year runner with a half-dozen career starts scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards in the second half, finishing off a Jets team that couldn't hold a 13-point lead or get out of its own way.

New York (1-6) has already matched its loss total from last season, when coach Eric Mangini was dubbed the "Mangenius" for taking a previously 4-12 team to the playoffs.

There's been nothing brilliant about their play this year.

In some ways, this one was the worst yet.

    mind.the.gap.20041229.jpg

Pennington, the main target of fans' wrath, put the Jets ahead with touchdown passes of 57 and 36 yards to Laveranues Coles, showing he can still make a big play. He couldn't make any meaningful ones in a horrid second half by the Jets: two costly pass interference penalties, a shanked punt, a personal foul for punching a downed runner, a botched snap and Johnathan Joseph's 42-yard interception return for a touchdown that made it 38-23 with 37 seconds left.

Pennington threw his third touchdown pass on the final play of the game, little consolation to a team off to its worst start in eight years. The Jets also opened 1-6 under Bill Parcells in 1999.

Pennington has been under fire in New York for his dink-and-dunk passing and six interceptions in the previous three games. Fans were clamoring for stong-armed Kellen Clemens to give it a try, a move that Mangini has so far resisted.

As he watched the second half unfold, Mangini saw a lot more problems than just the quarterback.

First-round draft pick Darrelle Revis drew a pair of pass interference penalties that extended Bengals touchdown drives during their comeback from a 13-point deficit. Carson Palmer finished one of them with a 3-yard pass to T.J. Houshmandzadeh, and Watson completed the other with a 1-yard run.

Ben Graham's shanked, 20-yard punt set up the second drive, which put Cincinnati up 24-23 early in the fourth quarter.

    The mistakes kept coming.

Pennington was calling a play in the shotgun formation when the ball was snapped, a fumble that gave Cincinnati possession at the 50. The Bengals then drove for Watson's 2-yard touchdown with the help of a personal foul on safety Abram Elam, who threw a left-handed punch at Watson on the ground at the end of a run.

Not that the Bengals were on top of their game, either. They were flagged for having 12 men in the defensive huddle in the first half, and had to use a timeout because they had too many defensive players on the field in the second half.

  • Preview: New York Jets (1-5) at Cincinnati Bengal (1-4)

    vida-guerra  vida-guerra  vida-guerra  vanessa-minnillo  winona-ryder  vida-guerra

The Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets hope to begin turning around their dismal seasons when they meet Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium.

The Bengals (1-4) have lost four straight, including a disappointing 27-20 loss at Kansas City last weekend coming off their bye week. Cincinnati is mired in last place in the AFC North, a division they won in 2005 before missing the playoffs last year.

It's also the first four-game skid for Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, who claims he is not feeling any pressure for the poor start. Cincinnati is on its longest slide since a six-game losing streak from Nov. 10-Dec. 15, 2002, the season before Lewis was hired.

"I guess I'll disappoint the fans if they think there's heat," Lewis said. "My only heat is internal and that's what drives me. That's the good thing, I guess, about this position. I'm not going to get concerned.

"Our margin for error is tight. That's the result of being 1-4. That's what we need to realize. Every play right now, we're not getting the benefit of the doubt. Balls are not really bouncing our way. That's what we need to realize and keep doing things the right way. Building upon the positive things and making corrections when it's not as positive and correct."

One of the problems Cincinnati has faced is a slew of injuries, including to star running back Rudi Johnson (hamstring). He sat out a 34-13 loss to New England on Oct. 1, and had only four carries against the Chiefs. Johnson has 185 rushing yards on 62 carries and just one touchdown catch.

Right tackle Willie Anderson missed last week's loss with foot and knee injuries. The offensive line has used four different combinations in Cincinnati's first five games.

    victoria-silvstedt-33058.jpg

The lack of a productive running game has put pressure on quarterback Carson Palmer and receivers Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who have combined for 1,083 yards and 10 of Cincinnati's 13 offensive touchdowns. Houshmandzadeh has seven of those scores, two shy of his career-best set in 14 games last season.

New York (1-5) enters on a three-game losing streak, and quarterback Chad Pennington has taken the brunt of the blame. Pennington has thrown all six of his interceptions this season during the skid, including one in a 16-9 loss to Philadelphia last week - the first time the Jets failed to reach the end zone this year.

With fans and media clamoring for backup Kellen Clemens to be inserted, coach Eric Mangini is sticking with Pennington.

"There's a lot of different areas that need to get better: interceptions, tackling, run fits, all those things, coaching, strategy," Mangini said. "All those things need to improve and we're all in this together. It's not a one-person issue."

Pennington completed a season-low 11 of 21 passes for 128 yards in last week's loss as the Jets' offense stalled despite a season-high 130 yards rushing from Thomas Jones. Tight end Chris Baker also criticized New York's play-calling, but receiver Jerricho Cotchery backed Pennington.

"He's our leader," Cotchery said. "He's the leader of this team, not only on offense. One guy isn't going to create a spark because each individual has to create that spark within himself to help this team out. I think that's kind of a sensitive topic because everyone loves Chad in this building."

Jones' effort was a bright spot. Acquired from Chicago in the offseason, he is averaging just 2.8 yards per carry on the road.

The Jets' defense also ranks among the bottom five teams in the NFL with six sacks and two forced fumbles.

New York has won five straight against Cincinnati, including a 31-24 victory on Sept. 12, 2004 in the last meeting.
