Ted Nolan did it all by himself tonight. Nolan took back the coaching reins and won just as the Hall of Famer did on Saturday, with clutch offense from Miroslav Satan.

Satan broke the tie with 8:48 left Tuesday night and Rick DiPietro made 28 saves to push the Islanders to a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers.

Satan completed a winning rally for the second time, and the Islanders, with three goals in the final period, snapped the Rangers' winning streak at 4 games.

"We're a resilient bunch," said DiPietro. The New York Islanders trailed 2-1 on Saturday when DiPietro left the game in the second period after getting hit in the eye by a high stick of Pittsburgh forward Sidney Crosby. Satan scored twice in the third period to give Arbour his 740th victory with the team.

"The last game is something we will always remember," Nolan said. "This is a real good character kind of team that doesn't quit."

The New York Rangers, who went 5-1 on a homestand that concluded Monday with a 2-0 victory against Philadelphia, scored only 12 goals during that stretch but managed to keep winning with Henrik Lundqvist in the pipes.

They recorded 22 shots in the first period Monday and 45 overall, but ran into more resistance against the New York Islanders. "I think that our mental sharpness left something to be desired over the course of three periods," coach Tom Renney said. "We weren't as crisp as we needed to be, weren't as precise as we needed to be."

Henrik Lundqvist has played in every game this season and allowed more than one goal for the first time in 5 games. That was enough to drop the Rangers to 0-5-1 on the road.

"We've got to find a way to finish the job," forward Sean Avery said. "We didn't get it done. It's just upsetting sitting in this locker room with a loss."

DiPietro made 36 saves in the Islanders 2-1 win over the Rangers and now the Islanders are riding an 8-1-2 surge against their biggest rivals with DiPietro backstopping 7 of the wins.

"It's a good rivalry," he said. "Anytime you step on the ice it's always extra loud, extra intense. We enjoy playing them."

DiPietro said he wasn't concerned about getting right back into a game after his eye injury. He was given the go-ahead to practice Monday and made his seventh straight start Tuesday.

"It still feels a little different than the other one. It's hard to explain," he said. "The doctors cleared me to play and I did.

DiPietro made two key saves with three minutes left as the Islanders went on to win their third straight and fifth in six games.

Chris Drury gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the second period. Paul Mara restored the one-goal edge in the third. Hunter got the Islanders even 1-1 at 1:08 when he took a pass in the right circle and fired a shot that beat Lundqvist's glove and got under the crossbar to make it 1-1.

Fedotenko took advantage during a power play, when the teams were skating 4-on-3, by putting in a quick shot to Lundqvist's right off a cross-slot pass from Mike Comrie at 9:15.

It was the first short-handed goal the New York Rangers allowed in 24 chances after they were perfect at home.

The Rangers, held in check by the Islanders during the first half of the game broke through on a power play, the first infraction whistled against the Islanders, when Drury made it 1-0 with his third of the season off a pass from Mara at 13:40.

Henrik Lundqvist is a beast! Ole Henrik earned his fourth shutout of the season, stopping 30 shots, and Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shanahan accounted for the offense in the New York Rangers' 2-0 asswhuppin over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night.

Not only has Lundqvist been on fire all season, he has shown no signs of ever getting tired despite playing all 14 games for the Rangers (7-6-1).

New York won its 4th straight to finish a 5-1 homestand while the first-place Flyers (8-5) were shut out for the first time this season. Philadelphia has lost eight of 11 to the Rangers, who took a season-high 45 shots.

Most of the action in the first period took place in the Philadelphia end, but Henrik Lundqvist turned aside the 11 shots he faced. He stopped 14 more in the second.

Henrik Lundqvist, who had only 5 shutouts all last season, has allowed more than one goal only once this year. All his shutouts this season have come in the last eight games and the Rangers have gone 5-2-1.

He preserved his 11th shutout by denying Scottie Upshall on a breakaway in the second period, and then stopped Joffrey Lupul's shot with just more than five minutes left in the game.

Jaromir Jagr got the Rangers on the board late in the first on New York's 22nd and final shot of the period. Dan Girardi made a nice pass behind his back to Jagr, who carried the puck into the Philadelphia zone. Jagr skated to the left circle and, while being guarded by defenseman Braydon Coburn, wristed a shot that sailed over Biron's glove. It was Jagr's third goal of the season.

Jagr thought he scored No. 3 last Monday, but later the goal was credited to Shanahan as NHL officials used video replay to determine that his shot hit Shanahan's skate before reaching the Tampa Bay net.

Shanahan's power-play goal on this night made it 2-0 with 3:21 left. He slapped in a nice pass from Jagr above the right circle.

Biron made 43 saves but it wasnt enough after just his second game off this season. He was given a rest after allowing five goals on 41 shots in a 5-2 loss at Montreal on Thursday, he's not getting much support these days.

He was sharp Monday, making his best save in the second period when he stopped Marcel Hossa's quick shot off a deflected pass at the left post, but the Flyers lost for fourth time in six games. The Rangers blasted 20 shots in the first period against Washington for their previous high. The 22 were the most allowed by Philadelphia in a period this season, topping the 19 yielded to Carolina in the second on October 20. They gave up 44 overall that night, also a previous season high.

Chris Drury scored his first goal since opening night, and Henrik Lundqvist earned another shutout as the Rangers went on their first winning streak of the season by beating the Washington Capitals 2-0 on Thursday night. Lundqvist made 31 saves and has been a big reason why the Rangers have done well early in the year.

Henrik has allowed 20 goals in playing all 12 games and already has three shutouts this season, 10 in his three-year NHL career. New York (5-6-1) has won 2 straight and is 3-1 on its six-game homestand despite scoring a league-low 21 times during the young season.

Lundqvist made back-to-back monster saves late in the second period, and robbed Viktor Kozlov in the first with a big pad stop that had the young center shaking his head. The crowd chanted his name as the final seconds ticked off.

The Capitals lost for the seventh time in nine games following a 3-0 start that had them thinking of getting back to the playoffs for the first time since 2003. They have already dropped both this season's road meetings with the Rangers in a three-week span.

Olie Kolzig was sharp in making 26 saves for Washington, which hasn't won at Madison Square Garden since 2004. He even shook off being run into several times, including a collision with Drury in the first period that flattened Kolzig on his back.

Drury, who was signed along with Scott Gomez to a big free-agent contract in the summer, got the shaft of his stick on a drive by rookie defenseman Marc Staal in the second period to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 6:47.

It was the first NHL point for the 20-year-old Staal, whose brothers Eric (Carolina) and Jordan (Pittsburgh) are already star forwards in the NHL.

Playing without two 30-goal scorers and their top defenseman didn't seem to bother the Washington Capitals in their last game. Winning at Madison Square Garden promises to be far more difficult.

The Capitals look to end a six-game road losing streak against the New York Rangers on Thursday night when the teams meet for the second time this season.

Despite missing captain Chris Clark, left wing Alexander Semin and defenseman Tom Poti, the Capitals (5-6-0) coasted to a 7-1 victory over Toronto on Monday.

It was only the second win in eight games for Washington, which won as many as five games in the first month of the season for the first time since going 5-6-0 with one tie in 2001-02.

Alexander Ovechkin scored twice, Michael Nylander had three assists and five others scored their first goals of the season.

"We played very well tonight, all four lines played well, everybody scored and our goalie played well," Ovechkin said. "I think we deserved tonight's win."

The Capitals could be without Clark, Semin and Poti again on Thursday as they try to end an 0-5-1 skid at MSG, where they haven't won since Jan. 28, 2004.

Clark, who scored a career-high 30 goals last season, has missed the past two games after being struck on the left ear by a shot in Friday's loss to Vancouver. An ankle injury has limited Semin to four games this season and Poti -- a former Ranger -- has been slow to recover from a strained groin that has kept him sidelined the last three contests.

Ovechkin is doing his best to compensate for the injuries, collecting four goals and five assists during a four-game point streak. He scored a goal in Washington's 3-2 road loss to the Rangers on Oct. 12, and has five goals and four assists in nine games against them.

"These are the backs that we're going to ride," Rangers coach Tom Renney said. "These are important people to us because of their experience, the winning that they've done, because they can play and we need them to. Maybe within them they said, 'OK, finally.'"

Jagr has four goals and 12 assists in 12 games against the Capitals since they traded him to New York on Jan. 23, 2004.

Keeping the Rangers close during their scoring slump has been Lundqvist, who has allowed one goal or fewer in four of his last five games. He ranks among the NHL leaders with a 1.82 goals-against average and two shutouts.

Lundqvist has surrendered five goals during a three-game win streak against the Capitals, and is 6-2-0 with a 2.55 GAA in eight starts versus them.

Jaromir Jagr lost a few teeth from an errant stick, fired in a slap shot pass by goalie Johan Holmqvist during a power play for his third of the season with 9:15 left Monday night to give the previously winless New York Rangers a 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Brendan Shanahan scored another power-play goal 2:44 later, with assists from Jagr and Chris Drury, to secure New York's 2nd win in seven games. Nigel Dawes scored the first goal for the Rangers.

Vincent Lecavalier netted his ninth on a second-period penalty shot, but the Lightning fell to 0-4 on the road as they started a 3 game road trip in the New York area.

Henrik Lundqvist rebounded from a 4-1 loss to Toronto on Saturday with a 21-save effort. The only blemish Monday was Lecavalier's goal.

Lecavalier was hooked from behind by defenseman Marek Malik just moments after Jagr skated to the bench, holding his mouth after getting hit by a stick.

On the attempt, the sixth penalty shot of Lecavalier's career, Henrik skated down the middle as Lundqvist drifted in front of his crease. Lecavalier shifted the puck to either side of his stick before going to his backhand and sliding a shot back between the goalie's pads (nice 5 hole) to tie it 1-1 at 6:28.

Dawes gave New York a 1-0 lead in the first with his third, all scored in the previous three games. With his back to the net, Dawes deflected defenseman Paul Mara's shot from the left point between his legs and into the small gap between Holmqvist's right skate and the post at 7:40.

In the second period, Petr Prucha got his stick on a shot by Marc Staal, but the puck rang off the left post. Later in the frame, Mara got to the rebound of his shot in front and sent a backhander off the crossbar.

Then during a power play, that grew to a 5-on-3, Gomez hit the crossbar with 6:43 left in the period. Holmqvist, who played four games with the Rangers after coming up in their system, played steady throughout and finished with 32 saves.

Lecavalier's holding penalty wiped out the Lightning's third power play of the game in the third period. They finished 0-for-4. Lecavalier is 2-for-6 on penalty shots. Lundqvist has stopped 3 of 5 including a save against Pittsburgh's Jordan Staal this season.

Vesa Toskala stopped 32 shots to lead Toronto past the New York Rangers, 4-1, at Madison Square Garden. Pavel Kubina's first of the season fired up the Leafs in the second period and started a three-goal rampage against the stingy Rangers that carried Toronto to a 4-1 victory over the Rangers on Saturday night.

The defenseman lifted the Leafs into a 1-1 tie at 8:35, just 2:51 after Jaromir Jagr gave the Rangers the lead. Until then, New York held the advantage on the scoreboard and shot clock with a 20-7 edge.

The Rangers entered as the lowest-scoring NHL team (15 goals), but on the strength of goalie Henrik Lundqvist, had allowed a league-low 17.

Pavel Kubina picked up a goal and one assist for the Maple Leafs, who have won two in a row. John Pohl, Nik Antropov and Chad Kilger also scored for the Leafs.

Jaromir Jagr provided the only goal for the Rangers, who have lost five of their last six and is the NHL's most pathetic offense with 16 goals in 10 games. Henrik Lundqvist allowed three goals on 22 shots for his second regulation loss in three starts.

After New York scored the first goal of the game, the Leafs hit the net three times in the second period to take control of the contest. Kubina's shot from the right circle drew Toronto even at 1-1.

Toronto then took a 2-1 lead as Pohl picked up his first goal of the season on a slot with 4:14 to play in the period. Lundqvist misplayed the puck behind the net right to Boyd Devereaux, who passed to Pohl for the easy goal.

Antropov made it 3-1 by tipping home Tomas Kaberle's centering feed only 1:20 later.

Toskala made the two-goal edge stand up, making 10 saves in the final 20 minutes, including a pair of acrobatic stops with 90 seconds left as three Rangers poked away at the puck in the crease. Kilger added an empty-net goal with 16 seconds remaining to seal the win.

Jagr broke a scoreless tie with 5:44 played in the second period as he unloaded a snap shot from the right faceoff dot, but the Rangers offense was a nighmare for the remainder of the game.

Kubina's goal was the first even-strength tally given up by the Rangers in 230 minutes, 37 seconds dating back to October 18 in Atlanta.

The New York Rangers are league's lowest-scoring and look to turn things around on Saturday when the Rangers take on the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Rangers (3-5-1) have only 15 goals this season and have scored one or no goals in five of their nine games, including consecutive 1-0 defeats to close out an 0-2-1 road trip Tuesday. New York returned home on Thursday and got two goals from Nigel Dawes in a 2-0 win over New Jersey. Goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who has started each of the Rangers' games, stopped 22 shots.

Lundqvist had a shutout last Saturday in a loss at Boston and anchors a defense that has allowed just 17 goals, tied for the fewest in the league. He has gone 99 minutes, 16 seconds without allowing a goal.

Nigel Dawes' first goal just 57 seconds into the game ended the Rangers' scoreless drought at 126 minutes. It was also their first goal at even strength in 182:06, stretching to a 3-1 home loss against the Ottawa Senators on Oct. 13.

New York , though, don't want to rely on Dawes for all of their offense - he was playing in just his 12th game and had just one career goal coming in. "He's a good player," coach Tom Renney said. "He's got a quick release when he goes to the net, and he's got enough confidence to shoot the puck."

The Maple Leafs have had some trouble with injuries, both Darcy Tucker and Kyle Wellwood are both out indefinitely.

"We had some fun, they were talking to each other and there was no tension," Toronto coach Paul Maurice said. "I was happy for them. They've been tight for a while and that was a great breakthrough."

Henrik Lundqvist made 22 saves in his second shutout this year, and Dawes broke New York out of its scoring slump with two goals Thursday night to lift the Rangers to a 2-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

Lundqvist, who has started all nine games, earned a shutout Saturday in a shootout loss at Boston and took a tough defeat in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

The Rangers think defense first and have allowed one goal in three games. New York is playing without injured forwards Martin Straka, Sean Avery, and Ryan Callahan, and moved defenseman Jason Strudwick up against the Devils.

"I like the way the team is playing right now," Lundqvist said. "We just have to score a little bit more.

"I know we might not score that much, so I have to keep focused and play a very good game to get the win."

The New York Rangers didn't give their fans a chance to get frustrated at the start of a six-game homestand after a 0-2-1 road trip that produced only three goals.

Brodeur, playing for the first time in a week after a game on the bench, was very sharp, making 29 saves. The Devils finished their road trip 3-5-1 including three shutout losses and will open their brand new arena in Newark, N.J., on Saturday against Ottawa. The Rangers are (3-5-1) and have scored 15 goals in nine games and allowed 17.

The NJ Devils almost got even in the second period when Travis Zajac slapped a shot off the right post during a delayed penalty call. The puck bounced off the goal post, hit the back of Lundqvist's leg, and fell behind him, damn close to the goal line before it was knocked away by defenseman Michal Rozsival.

New Jersey chocked on two power-play chances in the second period, but nearly scored a short-handed goal when Marcel Hossa sent Chris Drury all alone on a breakaway. His weak attempt was knocked aside by Brodeur. Brodeur has played in 69 of 71 Devils games against the Rangers, dating to Dec. 26, 1993.

The New York Rangers figured signing Scott Gomez away from the rival New Jersey Devils would only make them better. That, however, hasn't come close to reality in the early part of the season.

Gomez faces his former team for the first time Thursday night as the punchless Rangers try to end a four-game skid in their first meeting this season against New Jersey.

The Rangers made the biggest splash in the free-agent market, signing Gomez and fellow center Chris Drury to long-term deals on July 1. Gomez signed a seven-year, $51.5 million contract after spending his first seven NHL seasons across the river with New Jersey.

Never a big-time goal scorer, Gomez has been one of the league's best playmakers and was coming off a 47-assist season for the defense-first Devils in 2006-07. The speedy center figured to hit a career high in assists playing in New York with 600-goal scorers Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shanahan.

While there's still plenty of season left, Gomez hasn't made much of an impact with his new team so far. He is tied for the team lead with two goals but only has one assist in eight games, contributing to the Rangers' disappointing 2-5-1 start.

"Everybody says that you have to shoot more. I don't think that's the answer," Jagr said. "It's not 1980. You can't score from the red line. To score in this league, you have to have very good chances. Goaltenders are too good and defenses now aren't going to give you chances."

The Rangers haven't scored so few goals in their first eight games since they had nine in 1950, when they were shut out three times in a row.

"It's going to come. You've got to believe," Jagr said. "There's nothing else to do; you can't do anything else."

New York was on the wrong end of a 1-0 loss for the second consecutive game, falling at Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

The Rangers have lost back-to-back 1-0 games for the first time since they entered the NHL in 1926. They have gone 181 minutes, nine seconds without an even-strength goal since Jagr scored during a 3-1 loss to Ottawa on Oct. 13.

The only good news for the Rangers has been the outstanding play of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who has two wins in eight starts despite a stellar 2.00 goals-against average.

"Your heart just goes out to him," said Drury, who has one goal. "Hopefully he hangs in there and keeps making saves for us. We owe him a lot of goals."

A victory Thursday would give the Devils (3-4-1) a respectable record on their season-opening nine-game road trip. They are scheduled to play their first game in their new home - the Prudential Center - on Saturday against Ottawa.

New Jersey also has had trouble scoring with 21 goals in eight games. It has been shut out twice while managing six goals in its four losses.

The Devils scored twice in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit, but Bill Guerin's power-play goal with 3.7 seconds left lifted the New York Islanders to a 4-3 victory Saturday.

"We keep digging a hole," right wing Brian Gionta said. "We tried to dig out of it. We have to straighten that up."

Backup Kevin Weekes started Saturday, meaning Martin Brodeur will be back in net for this game looking to improve his very uncharacteristic 3.51 GAA.

Brodeur is 38-15-1 with 15 ties, seven shutouts and a 2.07 GAA lifetime against the Rangers. His 38 wins against the two New York-area teams are tied for his most versus any opponent.

The Devils went 5-2-1 against the Rangers last season, winning the final four meetings - all by one goal.
