Ted Nolan did it all by himself tonight. Nolan took back the coaching reins and won just as the Hall of Famer did on Saturday, with clutch offense from Miroslav Satan.

Satan broke the tie with 8:48 left Tuesday night and Rick DiPietro made 28 saves to push the Islanders to a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers.

Satan completed a winning rally for the second time, and the Islanders, with three goals in the final period, snapped the Rangers' winning streak at 4 games.

"We're a resilient bunch," said DiPietro. The New York Islanders trailed 2-1 on Saturday when DiPietro left the game in the second period after getting hit in the eye by a high stick of Pittsburgh forward Sidney Crosby. Satan scored twice in the third period to give Arbour his 740th victory with the team.

"The last game is something we will always remember," Nolan said. "This is a real good character kind of team that doesn't quit."

The New York Rangers, who went 5-1 on a homestand that concluded Monday with a 2-0 victory against Philadelphia, scored only 12 goals during that stretch but managed to keep winning with Henrik Lundqvist in the pipes.

They recorded 22 shots in the first period Monday and 45 overall, but ran into more resistance against the New York Islanders. "I think that our mental sharpness left something to be desired over the course of three periods," coach Tom Renney said. "We weren't as crisp as we needed to be, weren't as precise as we needed to be."

Henrik Lundqvist has played in every game this season and allowed more than one goal for the first time in 5 games. That was enough to drop the Rangers to 0-5-1 on the road.

"We've got to find a way to finish the job," forward Sean Avery said. "We didn't get it done. It's just upsetting sitting in this locker room with a loss."

DiPietro made 36 saves in the Islanders 2-1 win over the Rangers and now the Islanders are riding an 8-1-2 surge against their biggest rivals with DiPietro backstopping 7 of the wins.

"It's a good rivalry," he said. "Anytime you step on the ice it's always extra loud, extra intense. We enjoy playing them."

DiPietro said he wasn't concerned about getting right back into a game after his eye injury. He was given the go-ahead to practice Monday and made his seventh straight start Tuesday.

"It still feels a little different than the other one. It's hard to explain," he said. "The doctors cleared me to play and I did.

DiPietro made two key saves with three minutes left as the Islanders went on to win their third straight and fifth in six games.

Chris Drury gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the second period. Paul Mara restored the one-goal edge in the third. Hunter got the Islanders even 1-1 at 1:08 when he took a pass in the right circle and fired a shot that beat Lundqvist's glove and got under the crossbar to make it 1-1.

Fedotenko took advantage during a power play, when the teams were skating 4-on-3, by putting in a quick shot to Lundqvist's right off a cross-slot pass from Mike Comrie at 9:15.

It was the first short-handed goal the New York Rangers allowed in 24 chances after they were perfect at home.

The Rangers, held in check by the Islanders during the first half of the game broke through on a power play, the first infraction whistled against the Islanders, when Drury made it 1-0 with his third of the season off a pass from Mara at 13:40.

Henrik Lundqvist is a beast! Ole Henrik earned his fourth shutout of the season, stopping 30 shots, and Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shanahan accounted for the offense in the New York Rangers' 2-0 asswhuppin over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night.

Not only has Lundqvist been on fire all season, he has shown no signs of ever getting tired despite playing all 14 games for the Rangers (7-6-1).

New York won its 4th straight to finish a 5-1 homestand while the first-place Flyers (8-5) were shut out for the first time this season. Philadelphia has lost eight of 11 to the Rangers, who took a season-high 45 shots.

Most of the action in the first period took place in the Philadelphia end, but Henrik Lundqvist turned aside the 11 shots he faced. He stopped 14 more in the second.

Henrik Lundqvist, who had only 5 shutouts all last season, has allowed more than one goal only once this year. All his shutouts this season have come in the last eight games and the Rangers have gone 5-2-1.

He preserved his 11th shutout by denying Scottie Upshall on a breakaway in the second period, and then stopped Joffrey Lupul's shot with just more than five minutes left in the game.

Jaromir Jagr got the Rangers on the board late in the first on New York's 22nd and final shot of the period. Dan Girardi made a nice pass behind his back to Jagr, who carried the puck into the Philadelphia zone. Jagr skated to the left circle and, while being guarded by defenseman Braydon Coburn, wristed a shot that sailed over Biron's glove. It was Jagr's third goal of the season.

Jagr thought he scored No. 3 last Monday, but later the goal was credited to Shanahan as NHL officials used video replay to determine that his shot hit Shanahan's skate before reaching the Tampa Bay net.

Shanahan's power-play goal on this night made it 2-0 with 3:21 left. He slapped in a nice pass from Jagr above the right circle.

Biron made 43 saves but it wasnt enough after just his second game off this season. He was given a rest after allowing five goals on 41 shots in a 5-2 loss at Montreal on Thursday, he's not getting much support these days.

He was sharp Monday, making his best save in the second period when he stopped Marcel Hossa's quick shot off a deflected pass at the left post, but the Flyers lost for fourth time in six games. The Rangers blasted 20 shots in the first period against Washington for their previous high. The 22 were the most allowed by Philadelphia in a period this season, topping the 19 yielded to Carolina in the second on October 20. They gave up 44 overall that night, also a previous season high.

Chris Drury scored his first goal since opening night, and Henrik Lundqvist earned another shutout as the Rangers went on their first winning streak of the season by beating the Washington Capitals 2-0 on Thursday night. Lundqvist made 31 saves and has been a big reason why the Rangers have done well early in the year.

Henrik has allowed 20 goals in playing all 12 games and already has three shutouts this season, 10 in his three-year NHL career. New York (5-6-1) has won 2 straight and is 3-1 on its six-game homestand despite scoring a league-low 21 times during the young season.

Lundqvist made back-to-back monster saves late in the second period, and robbed Viktor Kozlov in the first with a big pad stop that had the young center shaking his head. The crowd chanted his name as the final seconds ticked off.

The Capitals lost for the seventh time in nine games following a 3-0 start that had them thinking of getting back to the playoffs for the first time since 2003. They have already dropped both this season's road meetings with the Rangers in a three-week span.

Olie Kolzig was sharp in making 26 saves for Washington, which hasn't won at Madison Square Garden since 2004. He even shook off being run into several times, including a collision with Drury in the first period that flattened Kolzig on his back.

Drury, who was signed along with Scott Gomez to a big free-agent contract in the summer, got the shaft of his stick on a drive by rookie defenseman Marc Staal in the second period to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 6:47.

Playing without two 30-goal scorers and their top defenseman didn't seem to bother the Washington Capitals in their last game. Winning at Madison Square Garden promises to be far more difficult.

The Capitals look to end a six-game road losing streak against the New York Rangers on Thursday night when the teams meet for the second time this season.

Despite missing captain Chris Clark, left wing Alexander Semin and defenseman Tom Poti, the Capitals (5-6-0) coasted to a 7-1 victory over Toronto on Monday.

It was only the second win in eight games for Washington, which won as many as five games in the first month of the season for the first time since going 5-6-0 with one tie in 2001-02.

Alexander Ovechkin scored twice, Michael Nylander had three assists and five others scored their first goals of the season.

"We played very well tonight, all four lines played well, everybody scored and our goalie played well," Ovechkin said. "I think we deserved tonight's win."

The Capitals could be without Clark, Semin and Poti again on Thursday as they try to end an 0-5-1 skid at MSG, where they haven't won since Jan. 28, 2004.

Clark, who scored a career-high 30 goals last season, has missed the past two games after being struck on the left ear by a shot in Friday's loss to Vancouver. An ankle injury has limited Semin to four games this season and Poti -- a former Ranger -- has been slow to recover from a strained groin that has kept him sidelined the last three contests.

"These are the backs that we're going to ride," Rangers coach Tom Renney said. "These are important people to us because of their experience, the winning that they've done, because they can play and we need them to. Maybe within them they said, 'OK, finally.'"

Jagr has four goals and 12 assists in 12 games against the Capitals since they traded him to New York on Jan. 23, 2004.

Keeping the Rangers close during their scoring slump has been Lundqvist, who has allowed one goal or fewer in four of his last five games. He ranks among the NHL leaders with a 1.82 goals-against average and two shutouts.

Lundqvist has surrendered five goals during a three-game win streak against the Capitals, and is 6-2-0 with a 2.55 GAA in eight starts versus them.

Jaromir Jagr lost a few teeth from an errant stick, fired in a slap shot pass by goalie Johan Holmqvist during a power play for his third of the season with 9:15 left Monday night to give the previously winless New York Rangers a 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Brendan Shanahan scored another power-play goal 2:44 later, with assists from Jagr and Chris Drury, to secure New York's 2nd win in seven games. Nigel Dawes scored the first goal for the Rangers.

Vincent Lecavalier netted his ninth on a second-period penalty shot, but the Lightning fell to 0-4 on the road as they started a 3 game road trip in the New York area.

Henrik Lundqvist rebounded from a 4-1 loss to Toronto on Saturday with a 21-save effort. The only blemish Monday was Lecavalier's goal.

Lecavalier was hooked from behind by defenseman Marek Malik just moments after Jagr skated to the bench, holding his mouth after getting hit by a stick.

On the attempt, the sixth penalty shot of Lecavalier's career, Henrik skated down the middle as Lundqvist drifted in front of his crease. Lecavalier shifted the puck to either side of his stick before going to his backhand and sliding a shot back between the goalie's pads (nice 5 hole) to tie it 1-1 at 6:28.

Dawes gave New York a 1-0 lead in the first with his third, all scored in the previous three games. With his back to the net, Dawes deflected defenseman Paul Mara's shot from the left point between his legs and into the small gap between Holmqvist's right skate and the post at 7:40.

In the second period, Petr Prucha got his stick on a shot by Marc Staal, but the puck rang off the left post. Later in the frame, Mara got to the rebound of his shot in front and sent a backhander off the crossbar.

Then during a power play, that grew to a 5-on-3, Gomez hit the crossbar with 6:43 left in the period. Holmqvist, who played four games with the Rangers after coming up in their system, played steady throughout and finished with 32 saves.

Lecavalier's holding penalty wiped out the Lightning's third power play of the game in the third period. They finished 0-for-4. Lecavalier is 2-for-6 on penalty shots. Lundqvist has stopped 3 of 5 including a save against Pittsburgh's Jordan Staal this season.

Vesa Toskala stopped 32 shots to lead Toronto past the New York Rangers, 4-1, at Madison Square Garden. Pavel Kubina's first of the season fired up the Leafs in the second period and started a three-goal rampage against the stingy Rangers that carried Toronto to a 4-1 victory over the Rangers on Saturday night.

The defenseman lifted the Leafs into a 1-1 tie at 8:35, just 2:51 after Jaromir Jagr gave the Rangers the lead. Until then, New York held the advantage on the scoreboard and shot clock with a 20-7 edge.

The Rangers entered as the lowest-scoring NHL team (15 goals), but on the strength of goalie Henrik Lundqvist, had allowed a league-low 17.

Pavel Kubina picked up a goal and one assist for the Maple Leafs, who have won two in a row. John Pohl, Nik Antropov and Chad Kilger also scored for the Leafs.

Jaromir Jagr provided the only goal for the Rangers, who have lost five of their last six and is the NHL's most pathetic offense with 16 goals in 10 games. Henrik Lundqvist allowed three goals on 22 shots for his second regulation loss in three starts.

After New York scored the first goal of the game, the Leafs hit the net three times in the second period to take control of the contest. Kubina's shot from the right circle drew Toronto even at 1-1.

Toronto then took a 2-1 lead as Pohl picked up his first goal of the season on a slot with 4:14 to play in the period. Lundqvist misplayed the puck behind the net right to Boyd Devereaux, who passed to Pohl for the easy goal.

Antropov made it 3-1 by tipping home Tomas Kaberle's centering feed only 1:20 later.

Toskala made the two-goal edge stand up, making 10 saves in the final 20 minutes, including a pair of acrobatic stops with 90 seconds left as three Rangers poked away at the puck in the crease. Kilger added an empty-net goal with 16 seconds remaining to seal the win.

Jagr broke a scoreless tie with 5:44 played in the second period as he unloaded a snap shot from the right faceoff dot, but the Rangers offense was a nighmare for the remainder of the game.

Kubina's goal was the first even-strength tally given up by the Rangers in 230 minutes, 37 seconds dating back to October 18 in Atlanta.

The New York Rangers are league's lowest-scoring and look to turn things around on Saturday when the Rangers take on the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Rangers (3-5-1) have only 15 goals this season and have scored one or no goals in five of their nine games, including consecutive 1-0 defeats to close out an 0-2-1 road trip Tuesday. New York returned home on Thursday and got two goals from Nigel Dawes in a 2-0 win over New Jersey. Goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who has started each of the Rangers' games, stopped 22 shots.

Lundqvist had a shutout last Saturday in a loss at Boston and anchors a defense that has allowed just 17 goals, tied for the fewest in the league. He has gone 99 minutes, 16 seconds without allowing a goal.

Nigel Dawes' first goal just 57 seconds into the game ended the Rangers' scoreless drought at 126 minutes. It was also their first goal at even strength in 182:06, stretching to a 3-1 home loss against the Ottawa Senators on Oct. 13.

New York , though, don't want to rely on Dawes for all of their offense - he was playing in just his 12th game and had just one career goal coming in. "He's a good player," coach Tom Renney said. "He's got a quick release when he goes to the net, and he's got enough confidence to shoot the puck."

The Maple Leafs have had some trouble with injuries, both Darcy Tucker and Kyle Wellwood are both out indefinitely.

"We had some fun, they were talking to each other and there was no tension," Toronto coach Paul Maurice said. "I was happy for them. They've been tight for a while and that was a great breakthrough."

Henrik Lundqvist made 22 saves in his second shutout this year, and Dawes broke New York out of its scoring slump with two goals Thursday night to lift the Rangers to a 2-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

Lundqvist, who has started all nine games, earned a shutout Saturday in a shootout loss at Boston and took a tough defeat in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

The Rangers think defense first and have allowed one goal in three games. New York is playing without injured forwards Martin Straka, Sean Avery, and Ryan Callahan, and moved defenseman Jason Strudwick up against the Devils.

"I like the way the team is playing right now," Lundqvist said. "We just have to score a little bit more.

"I know we might not score that much, so I have to keep focused and play a very good game to get the win."

The New York Rangers didn't give their fans a chance to get frustrated at the start of a six-game homestand after a 0-2-1 road trip that produced only three goals.

The Rangers are (3-5-1) and have scored 15 goals in nine games and allowed 17.

The NJ Devils almost got even in the second period when Travis Zajac slapped a shot off the right post during a delayed penalty call. The puck bounced off the goal post, hit the back of Lundqvist's leg, and fell behind him, damn close to the goal line before it was knocked away by defenseman Michal Rozsival.

New Jersey chocked on two power-play chances in the second period, but nearly scored a short-handed goal when Marcel Hossa sent Chris Drury all alone on a breakaway. His weak attempt was knocked aside by Brodeur. Brodeur has played in 69 of 71 Devils games against the Rangers, dating to Dec. 26, 1993.

The New York Rangers figured signing Scott Gomez away from the rival New Jersey Devils would only make them better. That, however, hasn't come close to reality in the early part of the season.

Gomez faces his former team for the first time Thursday night as the punchless Rangers try to end a four-game skid in their first meeting this season against New Jersey.

The Rangers made the biggest splash in the free-agent market, signing Gomez and fellow center Chris Drury to long-term deals on July 1. Gomez signed a seven-year, $51.5 million contract after spending his first seven NHL seasons across the river with New Jersey.

Never a big-time goal scorer, Gomez has been one of the league's best playmakers and was coming off a 47-assist season for the defense-first Devils in 2006-07. The speedy center figured to hit a career high in assists playing in New York with 600-goal scorers Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shanahan.

While there's still plenty of season left, Gomez hasn't made much of an impact with his new team so far. He is tied for the team lead with two goals but only has one assist in eight games, contributing to the Rangers' disappointing 2-5-1 start.

"Everybody says that you have to shoot more. I don't think that's the answer," Jagr said. "It's not 1980. You can't score from the red line. To score in this league, you have to have very good chances. Goaltenders are too good and defenses now aren't going to give you chances."

The Rangers haven't scored so few goals in their first eight games since they had nine in 1950, when they were shut out three times in a row.

"It's going to come. You've got to believe," Jagr said. "There's nothing else to do; you can't do anything else."

New York was on the wrong end of a 1-0 loss for the second consecutive game, falling at Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

The Rangers have lost back-to-back 1-0 games for the first time since they entered the NHL in 1926. They have gone 181 minutes, nine seconds without an even-strength goal since Jagr scored during a 3-1 loss to Ottawa on Oct. 13.

The only good news for the Rangers has been the outstanding play of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who has two wins in eight starts despite a stellar 2.00 goals-against average.

"Your heart just goes out to him," said Drury, who has one goal. "Hopefully he hangs in there and keeps making saves for us. We owe him a lot of goals."

A victory Thursday would give the Devils (3-4-1) a respectable record on their season-opening nine-game road trip. They are scheduled to play their first game in their new home - the Prudential Center - on Saturday against Ottawa.

New Jersey also has had trouble scoring with 21 goals in eight games. It has been shut out twice while managing six goals in its four losses.

The Devils scored twice in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit, but Bill Guerin's power-play goal with 3.7 seconds left lifted the New York Islanders to a 4-3 victory Saturday.

"We keep digging a hole," right wing Brian Gionta said. "We tried to dig out of it. We have to straighten that up."

Backup Kevin Weekes started Saturday, meaning Martin Brodeur will be back in net for this game looking to improve his very uncharacteristic 3.51 GAA.

Brodeur is 38-15-1 with 15 ties, seven shutouts and a 2.07 GAA lifetime against the Rangers. His 38 wins against the two New York-area teams are tied for his most versus any opponent.

The Devils went 5-2-1 against the Rangers last season, winning the final four meetings - all by one goal.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- All the New York Rangers have to show for those many zeros in the big salaries they gave to Chris Drury and Scott Gomez during the offseason are a lot more zeros on the scoreboard.

Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside 36 shots in another strong start Tuesday night and the Pittsburgh Penguins won their third in a row by handing the Rangers their second successive 1-0 loss.

It marked the first time in the 82 seasons of the Original Six franchise that the Rangers absorbed back-to-back 1-0 defeats, according to Elias Sports Bureau. They lost 1-0 in a shootout on Saturday to Boston.

"It's going to come. You've got to believe," said Jaromir Jagr, off to the worst start of his 17-season career with only one goal in eight games. "There's nothing else to do; you can't do anything else."

Evgeni Malkin scored on a power play early in the second period to ruin a good night by Henrik Lundqvist, who made a succession of excellent saves while stopping 21 shots. The biggest save came on Jordan Staal's penalty shot less than a minute after Malkin scored.

The only way for Lundqvist to win these days is by shutout, and even that isn't a guaranteed win. Despite having one of the NHL's prime collection of scorers -- they added Gomez and Drury in megadollar offseason deals -- the Rangers have only 13 goals while going 2-5-1.

"Your heart just goes out to him (Lundqvist)," Drury said. "Hopefully he hangs in there and keeps making saves for us. We owe him a lot of goals."

The Rangers haven't scored so few goals in their first eight games since they had nine in 1950, when they were shut out for three in a row. No matter, Fleury said he never relaxed.

"They've got so many skilled players, you never know what's coming on the next shot," Fleury said. "You've always got to stay ready."

The Rangers have gone 181 minutes, nine seconds without scoring an even-strength goal, or since Jagr got his only goal during a 3-1 loss to Ottawa on Oct. 13.

The Rangers, seen as a Stanley Cup contender after their busy offseason, have lost four in a row and six of seven. Some of their best chances came late, with Ryan Callahan hitting the right post with five minutes left. They also couldn't score on a power play created by a too many men on the ice call with slightly less than four minutes left.

"If you play like this night in and night out, I don't care what team you are, it's going to happen," Gomez said. "Two goals in two games against, we'll take it. We're just not scoring."

New York picked an inopportune time to go against Fleury, who shook off an up-and-down start to make 30 saves in a 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday. Fleury has stopped 66 of 67 shots since a 5-4 loss to New Jersey last Wednesday.

"You saw it Saturday night, you saw it tonight, he was the best player on our team," Whitney said of Fleury, who allowed 18 goals in his first five games. "No one lost faith in him and he worked as hard as he could in practice. We're all real pumped for him."

Callahan drew a costly tripping penalty with 1.4 seconds left in the first period. The Penguins converted with 44 seconds gone in the second when Ryan Whitney slid the puck across the crease and it deflected off the heel of Malkin's stick and past Lundqvist inside the near post.

Sidney Crosby got the second assist for his 10th point.

"He (Whitney) made a great heads-up play to read that and get that puck to him quick," Crosby said. "He (Malkin) was strong in front of the net, he had a guy on him, and he found a way to get a stick on it. Those are kind of goals you need."

Only 26 seconds later, Staal was hauled down by defenseman Fedor Tyutin near the blue line and was awarded a penalty shot. Staal tried to push the puck between Lundqvist's pads, but the goalie covered up quickly to make the save.

Staal, now 19, was the youngest player in NHL history to score on a penalty shot when he did so against Columbus last season, but is 0-for-2 since then.

Malkin missed another chance for Pittsburgh to make it 2-0 later in the period, ringing a shot off the right post.

The shutout was Fleury's eighth in 144 career games. ... The Rangers were without F Martin Straka (broken right index finger), who is out for about a month. ... The Rangers have scored one goal in the second period and have only five in the first two frames. ... Staal played against brother Marc, a Rangers rookie defenseman, for the first time. ... Pittsburgh has scored at least one power-play goal in all eight games. ... The Penguins are 6-1-2 against the Rangers the last two seasons.

Looking to bolster their offense, the New York Rangers committed more than $80 million this offseason to sign free-agent centers Chris Drury and Scott Gomez. The early season struggles of the pair, however, have contributed to the Rangers being in last place with the lowest goal total in the NHL.

With Drury and Gomez off to slow starts and fellow center Martin Straka lost to injury, the Rangers (2-4-1) face a tough task when they take on the Pittsburgh Penguins (4-3-0) on Tuesday.

Former Penguin Straka, tied with Gomez and Michal Rozsival for the Rangers' lead in goals at two, suffered a broken bone in his right index finger Saturday in New York's 1-0 shootout loss to Boston.

Gomez, with one assist, and Drury have totaled just nine points. Drury has five assists, but the former Buffalo Sabre, who scored 67 goals over the past two seasons, has just one in seven games this season.

Drury's goal came during a three-point night in the Rangers' 5-2 season-opening win over Florida on Oct. 4 - the only time the Rangers have scored more than three goals in 2007-08. They have 13 goals on the season, going scoreless in 15 of 21 periods.

New York concludes a three-game road trip by trying to avoid its first four-game losing streak since Jan. 31-Feb. 6. Saturday's defeat marked the second time it has been shut out this season.

Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has done his best to keep the Rangers in games, allowing more than three goals only once while starting all seven contests. He is 7-3-3 with a 2.26 goals-against average in 13 starts against Pittsburgh.

"Henrik's been great all year," said Gomez, who received a seven-year contract worth $51.5 million while Drury signed for five years and $35.3 million. "That's not the area we have to worry about."

Jaromir Jagr's lack of production hasn't helped matters. With one goal, the Rangers captain has his lowest total in the first seven games of any of his 17 seasons.

Jagr has 15 goals and 14 assists in 28 games against the Penguins since they traded him to Washington on Jan. 23, 2004. He has seven goals and five assists in 13 trips to Pittsburgh, but has gone pointless in three of his last four visits.

The Penguins open a three-game homestand looking to build on their first back-to-back wins of the season after defeating the Capitals 2-1 on Saturday. Ryan Whitney's fourth career game-winning goal provided the final margin with 2:01 left in the second period.

The Penguins' last three-game win streak occurred during a four-game unbeaten run from March 24-29.

"I don't think we can afford to look too far ahead," said center Sidney Crosby, who has eight goals and 12 assists in 15 meetings with the Rangers. "We've made some good steps here the past couple of games. We have to build off it."

Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury is 6-0-2 with a 2.31 GAA in his last eight games against New York, improving him to 7-6-2 with a 3.15 GAA in 15 starts versus the Rangers. He allowed a season low in goals while making 30 saves against Washington.

"Those guys helped me out," Fleury said. "They didn't let (Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin) get in front of me."

The Penguins have a power-play goal in each game and are 9-for-41 on the season.

Tuesday's game will mark the first career meeting between brothers Jordan Staal, the Penguins' 19-year-old center, and Marc Staal, the Rangers' 20-year-old rookie defenseman. Jordan Staal scored his first goal of season Saturday.

Pittsburgh won last season's series 5-1-2, going 3-0-1 at Mellon Arena.

Kessel buries the Rangers in Shootouts - Game recap

Phil Kessel used the same formula that's worked for him in the past, and new Boston coach Claude Julien wasn't about to change either.

Kessel scored the lone goal in a shootout to give the Bruins a 1-0 victory over the New York Rangers on Saturday.

After the first five shooters failed in the tiebreaker, Kessel skated in on Henrik Lundqvist and fired a wrist shot under the crossbar. The former University of Minnesota star had four shootout winners as a rookie last season.

"It was pretty much like last year," he said. "I didn't know what I was going to do until I was going in. I watched the first two (shooters) so I had an idea how he was playing."

Julien, hired during the offseason when Dave Lewis was fired, knew the results Kessel had and didn't want to alter the order.

"It's part of my job to do my homework," Julien said smiling. "Again, as a new coach, you gain as much information as possible, the percentages."

Lundqvist made 19 saves in regulation and overtime, including a highlight-reel save on Marc Savard late in the opening period. Manny Fernandez stopped 26 shots for Boston in his first start since Oct. 12.

Fernandez, signed as a free agent during the offseason to bolster Boston's goaltending, credited the team's defense for the victory.

"It's great, but actually the guys played well defensively," he said. "They were strong handling rebounds and taking them away."

With the shootout victory, Boston ended an eight-game winless streak (0-5-3) against the Rangers. The Bruins' last win against New York was March 4, 2004, in Boston.

Rangers forward Martin Straka left the game in the first period when he broke a finger blocking Zdeno Chara's slap shot.

The Bruins improved to 5-2-0, while the low-scoring Rangers dropped to 2-4-1. New York has scored an NHL-low 13 goals.

"Henrik's been great all year. There's no question about it," Rangers center Scott Gomez said. "That's not the area we have to worry about."

Before Kessel's winner, Fernandez squeezed Jaromir Jagr's shot between his pads.

Lundqvist made his remarkable save on Savard with about 5 minutes left in the first period, reaching across the crease for a glove stop on a one-timer that looked to be a sure goal. Savard, who was near the bottom of the right circle when he let his shot fly, fell to his back and looked to the ceiling in apparent disbelief.

"It was just one of those things," Lundqvist said. "I saw him at the last moment on my left side. I stuck my glove up as I was falling down and it went right in."

Fernandez made a nice right pad save on Petr Prucha's backhanded bid from close range early into the second period.

One of the biggest cheers of the game came with 8:17 left in the third period when the message board read: "Good Luck, Red Sox. It's time to tame the Tribe." They played a Red Sox theme song and showed a fan holding a Red Sox cap, prompting the crowd to cheer.

Lundqvist has played all the Rangers' games so far this season. ... The starting time was pushed up three hours to 4 p.m. because of the baseball game. ... Travis Roy, the former Boston University hockey player that became a quadriplegic after slamming into the boards 11 seconds into his first shift, dropped the ceremonial first puck. The Bruins have committed to raise funds for his foundation, which supports survivors of spinal cord injuries.

The Boston Bruins were one of the NHL's worst home teams in 2006-07, but new coach Claude Julien has them off to a good start at TD Banknorth Garden this season.

However, remaining perfect at home could be a challenge for Julien and the Bruins on Saturday, when they host a New York Rangers team they haven't beaten since 2004.

The Bruins went 18-19-4 at the Garden last season - the second-worst home record in the Eastern Conference and fourth-worst in the league. Boston was winless in two home games against New York, falling 6-1 on Jan. 29 and suffering a 2-1 shootout loss on March 24.

Overall, the Bruins are 0-5-3 in eight meetings with the Rangers since a 3-1 victory on March 4, 2004. They've been outscored 31-12 in that stretch.

Boston (4-2-0) opened this year's home schedule with a 4-1 victory over Tampa Bay on Thursday night. Marco Sturm scored twice for his first multigoal game of the season and goalie Tim Thomas made 35 saves.

"We want to be a good home team," Sturm told the Bruins' official Web site, "so it was a perfect start."

Julien, however, doesn't agree. He expects to see improvement as the Bruins look to win their first two home games for the first time since 2001-02.

"It wasn't a pretty win," he said. "Certainly not to the expectations that we want. I think we are definitely happy with the win. It's certainly important. But hopefully, by the end of the year, we won't remember how we won that one."

Julien, who was fired by the first-place New Jersey Devils with three games left in last year's regular season, is looking for more consistency from his new club. After jumping to a 2-0 lead in the first period Thursday, Boston was outshot 15-3 in the second while allowing that period's only goal.

"I think it's just a matter of learning that the game is sixty minutes," said Julien, who went 5-2-1 against the Rangers while with the Devils last season. "If you come off a good period - a good twenty minutes - you have to come out even stronger the (next) period."

The Bruins may still be working on putting together a complete game, but they've fared well early this season. They've scored 14 goals while winning their last three games, which is one shy of their longest win streak from 2006-07.

New York (2-4-0), meanwhile, is hoping to avoid its third straight loss. The Rangers fell 5-3 in Atlanta on Thursday, giving the Thrashers their first win of the season.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist had a 2.02 goals-against average - sixth among goalies with at least four starts - before giving up all five scores Thursday to inflate his average to 2.53. He allowed two goals in the first period, and New York trailed for the rest of the game.

"It looks like it's impossible for our team to get a fast start," Lundqvist said. "They got momentum. We had to play on our heels."

New York has been outscored 5-0 in the first period of its four losses, but has outscored opponents 4-1 in the first period of its two wins.

The Rangers are 0-3-0 on the road to start the season. They haven't been winless through their first four road games since 1998-99, when they were 0-2 with three ties before notching their first victory away from Madison Square Garden.
